Who better to pick the best mystery books of the month than the people who run mystery bookstores?

Each month, the 35 quirky stores that make up IMBA submit their favorite recent reads to a rotating editor who then trims the list to five. Most are recent publications but sometimes something we missed the first time around sneaks in. Every selection is a gem that otherwise might have been lost among the more than 100 mysteries published each month.

This month:

a suspicious blaze claims a historic English manor house;

a search for a missing heiress in 1842 Philadelphia;

 "a glorious mystery and thriller...gives the reader a sense of dread that refuses to abate;"

Humor, a good police story--and Bruce Springsteen music at the Jersey shore;

a truly terrific main character, an authentic portrait of life in Canada's small towns and a mysterious pseudonymous author.
